- Overfeeding
- Crying
- Coughing
- When a child has swallowed air during feeding
Dangerous causes include
- Developmental anomaly e.g. cleft lip/palate (poorly formed lip and mouth)
- Gastroeosophangeal reflux disease
- Tracheosophageal fistula; abnormal connection between the airway and food passage
What you can do
- Most cases are not dangerous, especially if your child is healthy, active and gains weight appropriately.
- Position the child upright after feeding
- Put a small cloth/pillow under the baby’s head when the child is placed down
- Avoid overfeeding the child
Visit your doctor if
- it doesn’t look like milk
- it has strange color like yellow or green, or contains blood
- the child does not gain weight or has recurrent chest infection or cough.
