- A painful lump in the breast
- Pain while breastfeeding
- Fever, chills, and weakness
- The breast may be hard and red
- The surface of the breast may be warm/hot
What you can do
- You can still feed the child with the breast, this will reduce the congestion and aid recovery
- Do warm massage of the breast
- Take an analgesic e.g., paracetamol or ibuprofen
- Visit your doctor for examination and appropriate antibiotic prescription
Prevention
- Feed your baby more often to prevent breast engorgement
- If you have a cracked nipple, put breast milk on it and allow it to air-dry regularly
