SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS
These are illnesses that are passed between people through sexual contact. Many diseases fall under this group. The common ones include syphilis, gonorrhea, HIV infection/AIDS, herpes, hepatitis etc.
Who is likely to have STI?
- People that have unprotected sexual intercourse (sex without condom)
- People with more than one sexual partner: it is said that when you sleep with Mr/Miss A, you have indirectly slept with everyone Mr/Miss A sleep with.
- Some types of sex increase the risk e.g. anal sex, sex with animals etc
What are the likely symptoms?
Man
- Sore or wound or rash on the penis
- Discharge or pus come out of the penis
- Pain during urination
- Lower abdominal pain
- Swollen testes may occur
Woman
- Vaginal discharge with or without itching
- Lower abdominal pain
- High temperature/fever
- Pain during sex
- There may be fingerlike fleshy growths on the private part
What you can do
Most people with STI show no sign or symptoms, yet such a person can pass the infection to another person. Thus prevention is better practiced
