It is also called enteric fever, and is caused by bacterium called salmonella

How does one get typhoid?

1. Through intake of contaminated water
2. Ingestion of contaminated food
3. Through poor toilet hygiene

What you may notice;

1. Fever or high body temperature
2. Headaches
3. Weakness
4. Abdominal pain
5. Diarrhea and or vomiting
6. Poor appetite

What you can do

1. Go to a hospital to do a full blood count and culture test
2. Do other tests as recommended
3. Take antibiotics prescribed. The commonly used one is ciprofloxacin with flagyl. Please note that ciprofloxacin is not safe for children and pregnant women.

What may happen if left untreated?

1. Bleeding from the intestine
2. Intestinal perforation; this is a serious problem, and requires surgical operation
3. Irrational talk and violent behavior
4. Fainting or loss of consciousness

How to prevent typhoid

1. Eat properly cooked food
2. Reheat leftover food before eating
3. Drink clean boiled water
4. Wash your hands frequently
5. Ensure adequate toilet hygiene.
