- Through intake of contaminated water
- Ingestion of contaminated food
- Through poor toilet hygiene
What you may notice;
- Fever or high body temperature
- Headaches
- Weakness
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea and or vomiting
- Poor appetite
What you can do
- Go to a hospital to do a full blood count and culture test
- Do other tests as recommended
- Take antibiotics prescribed. The commonly used one is ciprofloxacin with flagyl. Please note that ciprofloxacin is not safe for children and pregnant women.
What may happen if left untreated?
- Bleeding from the intestine
- Intestinal perforation; this is a serious problem, and requires surgical operation
- Irrational talk and violent behavior
- Fainting or loss of consciousness
How to prevent typhoid
- Eat properly cooked food
- Reheat leftover food before eating
- Drink clean boiled water
- Wash your hands frequently
- Ensure adequate toilet hygiene.
