- Through mosquito bite
- When given blood that contain malaria parasite
- Sharing of sharp objects especially among those that abuse drugs
What you may notice include;
- Headaches
- General body pain
- Body weakness
- High body temperature (fever)
- Vomiting and or diarrhea
- Poor appetite
What tests can you do?
- MP (malaria parasite) test; this will tell the quantity of malaria in the blood. The result may be scanty, +, ++ or +++ depending on the number of malaria parasites seen in the blood
- Other tests like a full blood count can be done to be sure there are no other causes apart from malaria.
What are the possible treatments?
Possible treatment includes antimalarial like coartem, amatem, P-alaxin or any other antimalarial as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist. It is important that you complete the drugs even if you feel better after the first dose.
What happens if left untreated?
- In a pregnant woman, It may cause pregnancy loss or premature delivery
- It may cause convulsion or fainting especially in children
- It may cause passage of dark or red urine
- It may reduce the level of blood in the body
How can malaria be prevented?
- Clear the bush around the house
- Clear stagnant water in gutters, cans and containers around the house
- Sleep under insecticide treated nets
- Use insect sprays to kill mosquitoes in the home
- Get prompt test and treatment if you notice any symptom of malaria
