- Stomach ulcer: when the ulcer bleed, the blood can show in the stool
- Anal tear: this usually follow a forceful stooling e.g. when constipated
- Hemorrhoid
- Presence of growth or mass in the anus/rectum
- Use of blood thinners e.g., aspirin
What you may notice
- Passage of blood which can be fresh red (in pile) or dark
- The frequency of stooling may increase
- If the blood lost is much, you may feel weak, dizzy or faint
What you can do
It is important to see your doctor as soon as possible for examination and treatment even if the blood lost is not much. It is necessary that you avoid constipation by eating food rich in fibres, vegetables and fruits.
- Also avoid the use of NSAIDS, a class of painkillers e.g. ibuprofen, diclofenac
- Sitz bath can help
- Take antacids if you have history of stomach ulcer
