UPPER AIRWAY INFECTION (URTI): What you should know
Infection of the upper air passage is often caused by viruses but can also be caused by other agents.

- Exposure to cold
- Exposure to dust
- Contact with person with a respiratory infection
- Spread of infection from other parts of the body
What you may notice include;
- Blockage of the nose
- Running nose
- Headache
- High body temperature
- There may be cough
- Sorethroat
- There may be redness of the eyes
- The voice may become hoarse (unclear)
What you may do
- Visit your doctor; he may ask you to do full blood count, culture test for sputum or nasal discharge and other tests. Use the drugs as prescribed. Note that many URTI are caused by viruses and do not respond to antibiotics.
- Do steam inhalation or use loratidine or piriton to relieve running nose or nasal congestion
- You may use cough syrup
- Use analgesics like paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve the headache
- Take warm water or tea
- Increase your fluid intake
- Take vitamins and fruits
- Rest more
