Also called urine infection, it is common in pregnancy because of the pressure effect of the growing womb, the hormonal changes, and the changes in immunity during pregnancy.

A urine infection in woman can reduce the baby’s growth and can cause premature delivery.

What you may notice include

1. pain while peeing
2. increased rate or frequency of urination
3. pain in the lower tummy or the sides
4. inability to delay the urge to pee
5. passage of foul smelling, cloudy or bloody urine
6. the woman may have high temperature with chills
7. note, many cases of urine infection occur without symptoms, and may be picked during routine urine tests

What you can do

1. you are advised to do urine test and get necessary antibiotic prescription that is safe from your doctor

Prevention of urine infection in pregnancy

1. drink at least 3-4 litres of water a day
2. clean your genital or vaginal area with water regularly
3. wash your private part before and after sexual intercourse
4. after passing stool, wipe your anus from front to back and not the other way
5. pee when you have the urge, do not delay
