
CONSTIPATION IN CHILDREN: WHAT YOU CAN DO

Constipation means passage of hard stool or reduction in frequency of stooling.
What you may notice
- The child strains while passing stool
- The child may not stool for several days (note that some babies on exclusive breast feeding may not pass stool for 4-5 days)
- The child may complain of pain in the tummy
- The child passes small hard stool, sometimes with blood stains
- The food intake may reduce
What may have caused it
- A change in diet from breast milk to formula feeds
- Introduction of solid foods
- Excess intake of cow milk
- Poor water intake
- Diets rich in refined foods
- Intake of Nospamine, grape-water
What you can do
- Reduce the intake of milk
- Toilet training, encourage child to poo regularly
- Give fruits and vegetables
- Encourage child to take fluids, water, juice etc
Visit your doctor especially if
- Constipation persists
- Child vomits or has distended/swollen tummy
- There is blood in the stool
