ANKLE SPRAIN: WHAT YOU CAN DO
It occurs when ligaments (elastic cords that hold a joint together) are overstretched or torn.
Ankle sprain can occur when the
ankle is twisted during a fall, in sport, while walking in high heels, or while
slipping on a wet surface.
What you may notice
o
Pain
o
Swelling
o
Difficulty
standing or walking on the ankle
What you can do:
o
Rest: rest the ankle, avoid walking on it
o
Ice: apply ice pack rolled in a towel on the ankle for
20 minutes, repeat up to 4 times a day
o
Compression: apply firm bandage to the ankle, do not
make it too tight, start the wrap from the toes upward
o
Elevate the ankle on a pillow while lying flat, or on a
table while sitting
o
You
may use an analgesic e.g. ibuprofen
o
Please
do not rub or massage a sprained ankle
o
