CONVULSION AND SEIZURES IN ADULT
Convulsion is an abnormal uncontrollable jerky movement of the body. It may involve the whole body or just a part e.g., the eyes, hands, or lips. It is also called fit.
What you may notice
- Jerking of the hands and legs
- Foaming from the mouth
- The person may not respond to call
- The person may urinate or poo without knowing
What may cause it
- Epilepsy: a predisposition to having fits, this may be inherited.
- Head injury e.g., hitting the head on dashboard in a motor accident
- Infections of the brain e.g., meningitis
- In people who have stroke
- Severe malaria
What you can do
- If the person is about to fall, support him/her to break the fall
- Remove dangerous materials e.g., sharp objects, electric cables etc. from the area
- Lay the person on his left side
- Arrange for emergency transport to the hospital
- Epilepsy is NOT contagious; you cannot get it by touching the person’s body or saliva
- Do not put spoon or hand inside the person’s mouth
- Do not restrain the person; you may break his/her bone
- Do not force herbs or oil into the person’s mouth. The oil or herb may enter the lung and cause breathing difficulty
