DIET ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WITH HYPERTENSION
Hypertension means a high blood pressure, more than 140/90 mmhg measured on at least 2 occasions. A change in your diet and regular exercise are advised to achieve good control of the blood pressure. The diet is also recommended for people at risk of hypertension e.g. obese people, people with family history of hypertension.
The recommendations include
- Avoid intake of fatty foods
- Eat balanced meals containing carbohydrate, protein, minerals, and low fat
- Use cholesterol-free vegetable oils to cook
- Eat lean meat, avoid the skin of chicken and turkey, and avoid the intestine of cow and other fatty meats.
- Reduce intake of salt, add the little salt to food while cooking not after serving.
- Do not smoke
- Reduce intake of alcohol: beer, red wine, and other alcohol-containing drinks
- Reduce intake of caffeinated drinks like coffee, lipton
- Eat fruits as part of your meals everyday especially banana, tomatoes, carrots, onions
In addition to the above, do regular exercises e.g. brisk walk.
